About Sight Reading Tips
A new, independent guide to reading music at sight, launched October 2026.
Sight Reading Tips is a free guide to reading music at sight, mainly for piano: a practice plan, exercises, explanations of note reading, rhythm and key signatures, and a note-reading quiz.
A new site at an old address
This site launched in October 2026. Before that, this domain name was used by a business that sold a piano sight-reading course (PDFs, CDs and DVDs). We are not connected with that business or its owners, we do not sell those products and we cannot help with orders, downloads or refunds for them. Directory listings with an old phone number or address for this domain are out of date.
Who writes it
Pages are written and updated by a small editorial team, credited as "The Sight Reading Tips editors". We do not use invented author personas or claim teaching diplomas we do not hold.
How the content is written
- All pages are written from scratch for this site, based on standard music-theory facts and common teaching practice.
- Exam formats change, so we point you to your exam board's current syllabus rather than quoting rules that may be out of date.
- Pages carry an "updated" date and are corrected when we find an error.
Our app: Clef
The team that runs this site also makes Clef: Sight Reading Trainer, an iPhone and iPad app for note-reading drills (more at clefdrills.com). It is mentioned on relevant pages in a clearly labelled box. Nothing here requires it; the free note quiz on this site works in any browser.
